Finkelstein served 18 years with the New York Police Department before retiring as a lieutenant in 1982.  During that time he worked patrol duties, supervised a special narcotics unit in Harlem, and served with the Department’s Legal Bureau while studying law in the evenings.  Finkelstein credits much of his professional success as a trial lawyer to the people skills he developed in the police department: on both the personal and organizational levels.
